You have questions, we have answers!

Do you take orders by email?

Our bakery does not take orders by email. You can order cakes and other desserts by calling us. You can email us with details or images, or to get information, however, we cannot consider your order placed until you have spoken to someone on the phone. We have found over the years that there are too many variables when dealing with custom pastry orders, and often times, something that takes four or five emails can be settled quickly with one short phone call. So, please call us to place your order! Our phone number is 860-265-6188.

How do I determine how much I need?

First, choose your cakes or dessert - flavor, filling, and frosting. Choose your cakes or dessert based on the type of event you are hosting - a child's birthday party will be different than an elegant dinner party. Determine the number of people you are expecting. Cake sizes can provide a guide:

Specialty cakes' number of servings are as follows:
18 x 13" cakes ........45 to 55 servings
13 x 9" cakes .........20 to 25 servings
14" cakes ...............63 to 78 servings
12" cakes................40 to 56 servings
10" cakes ................28 to 38 servings
8" cakes.................20 to 24 servings
6" cakes.................12 to 14 servings

Our 9" cheesecake will serve between 10 and 14 guests.

Our 10" pies will serve between 8 and 10 guests.

Please note, the guide above is for standard cake size and tall cakes (7 inches or taller) can serve more guests. The servings are an estimate and can vary on the cut of the cake.

Need a little help? No worries, call us at 860-265-6188. We will be happy to provide insight as to the size and number of desserts that will be best for your event.

Do you deliver?

As a concierge bakery, we only offer delivery to our clients. Fees are calculated based on location and set up fees are additional. The delivery and setup fee can start at $75 and increase depending on the client's specifications. Please see the Terms and Conditions regarding responsibility after delivery.

You deliver, do you have an order minimum?

If your order is $120.00 or more, delivery is included to your event location. However, if the order is less, there is a delivery fee added to the invoice.

What's the best way to serve and store desserts with buttercream?

Buttercream is best when served at room temperature. Cakes can be stored in the refrigerator and should be removed 2-4 hours prior to serving.

We use all-natural ingredients and flavorings — no preservatives — so it is always better to serve fresh. However, if your plans change, or if you ordered more cake than you will use within 3 days, follow these instructions for storing the extra amount: freeze the remaining portion of the cake. After it is frozen, cut it into slices. Wrap the slices individually and store them in the freezer. Slices can be thawed as you need them. Additional refreezing and thawing is not recommended because it will cause the cake to become stale or freezer burned.

Should cheesecake be served at room temperature or chilled?

Serve the cheesecake chilled. Every cheesecake is different, but we feel that our cheesecake is best enjoyed when it is chilled, meaning it is being served soon after removing the cheesecake from the refrigerator.

Cheesecakes can be stored up to 3 days in the refrigerator without compromising quality and taste. Or, if you would like to avoid a holiday rush and long lines at the shop, you can freeze most cheesecake flavors for up to two weeks.

Cheesecake can be stored in the freezer for up to 60 days without compromising its quality. If kept frozen for that length of time, it is best to store in a freezer that is not the one you use every day. If you have a basement freezer or a garage freezer, use that instead, because with a freezer that isn't opened frequently there will be less fluctuation in the temperature and therefore less chance of the cheesecake getting freezer burn.

Buttercream Facts!

CakeSpell uses a real vanilla buttercream, created with 100% butter. There is no shortening or animal fat in our buttercream. Buttercream is richer but not as sweet. The easiest way to tell the difference between frosting and icing is that frosting has a cream base whilst icing is a sugary base like a glaze.

Planning Your Wedding Cake

We will help guide you to a delicious, beautiful, memorable wedding cake, but ultimately, the final decision is yours. In fact, you can even choose a different cake flavor for each tier of your cake. We recommend no more than three flavors.

Many people get confused about a tier and a layer. The tiers are the sections piled on top of one another (or sometimes balanced on columns), that you can see and count. Hidden under the buttercream, however, each of those tiers can be made of two layers of cake, with filling in between them. You won't see the layers until the cake is cut.

How big should the cake be and my options?

We recommend getting enough wedding cake to feed all of your guests. However, let's take in count the wedding style, time, and if you'll have other desserts. If you are having a buffet-style dessert table with other treats, you might opt for a slightly smaller cake than recommended for your number of guests. The main thing to remember is that no one skips dessert at a wedding, and you don't want to run out of the wedding cake.

You might opt for a service cake. It is the same flavor and number of layers as your wedding cake, however, it is not meant to be seen by the guests. It is taken directly to the kitchen, while the real wedding cake is placed on display. This allows your caterer to plate some of the cake before the real wedding cake is even cut, and in some cases, it can lower the price of the wedding cake.

What's the difference between Sponge and Butter cake?

There are two types of raised cakes – foam cakes and butter cakes. Foam cakes have a high egg to flour ratio and are leavened by the air beaten into whole eggs or egg whites. Butter cakes, on the other hand, contain fat from butter, margarine, or shortening and they rely on leavening agents such as baking powder or baking soda. The Sponge Cake is a foam cake. The Pound Cake is a butter cake.  CakeSpell uses egg whites as the base for sponge cake. Many of our brides prefer our butter cakes.

Okay, marzipan? Explain please?

Marzipan is an almond-flavored paste that can be used as frosting and molded into tasty decorations, whilst fondant is a popular sugar paste. CakeSpell does make the marzipan in-house, which yields the ability to make it vegan, refined sugar-free, and gluten-free.

What should I bring to my consultation?

Here are some things to consider before meeting with your consultant.

*Color- Swatches or a sample of your colors.

*Theme- Your inspiration and ideas for your wedding cake often come from things like the wedding dress, invitation, or even the shade of linens. If possible, bring samples of your inspiration.

*Budget- It is recommended to have a budget in mind and the number of guests you plan to serve on your big day.

I'm getting married and I have questions!

Your Wedding Cake Design

We can replicate most wedding cakes with the understanding that there may be some very subtle differences. We absolutely must see a quality photograph of the wedding cake in question before we can commit to recreating any particular cake.

I want fresh flowers on the cake!

For most wedding cakes that are decorated with fresh flowers, the florist does the placing of the flowers once the wedding cake has arrived at the venue. However, CakeSpell will be certain to coordinate the time of your wedding cake's arrival, to ensure that your florist has time to do their magic. By request, CakeSpell will pick up and arrange the flowers. CakeSpell has a great relationship with a local florist and can arrange fluent collaboration.

Wedding Cake Delivery

We will deliver your wedding cake 1-2 hours prior to the wedding. If a florist is placing fresh flowers on the wedding cake, we will coordinate with the florist to see what time s/he needs us to have the cake there. There is a charge for wedding cake delivery, which depends on distance. If you are out of our normal delivery area, you will have to make your own arrangements to pick up your wedding cake.

How will the cake Arrive?

By necessity, wedding cakes need to be refrigerated in order to arrive safely at your event, but we recommend that your cake be brought back to room temperature before serving in order to enjoy the full palette of our all-natural flavors as they were meant to be enjoyed.
